Telegram copier instrument list: copy only the symbols you want
A mixed signal room posts gold, indices, pairs and oil. An instrument list keeps the copier to the symbols you chose and logs the rest as skipped.
A Telegram signal copier with an instrument list copies only the symbols you name and skips every other call in the room. CopySignals is a cloud Telegram signal copier for MT4, MT5 and eTrader: it reads the rooms you already follow through your own Telegram account and places the trades on your own broker account, and the instrument list is one of the controls that decides which posts become orders.
What is an instrument list in a Telegram signal copier?
It is a short list of symbols on a copier. A signal for a symbol on the list is placed. A signal for any other symbol is skipped, and the reason is written to the event log. Leave the list empty and the copier takes every instrument the room posts.
Most rooms are not about one market. A room that started with gold adds indices, then a few currency pairs, then oil. You may follow it for one of those and have no interest in the rest, or your broker may not offer some of them, or your prop firm account may not allow them. The list keeps the copier to the part of the room you actually want.
Why filter by instrument at all?
There are four plain reasons, and they are the ones traders give us.
- You trade one market and know how its spread and sessions behave. The rest of the room is noise to you.
- Your broker does not quote an instrument the room trades. Without a list the copier tries the symbol, fails, and logs it. With a list it never tries.
- Your account rules limit what you may trade. Check the rules of your own firm; the list is how you act on them.
- You want a smaller account to carry less exposure than the room does, so you keep only the symbols you can size sensibly.
None of this says which instruments are worth trading. That is your decision, and trading carries risk whichever symbols you pick.
How do you set up an instrument list?
Start with what the room posts, not with what you hope it posts. Scroll back two weeks in the channel and write down every symbol it called, as the room spells it. Rooms use nicknames: "gold" for XAUUSD, "cable" for GBPUSD, "nas" or "us100" for an index. The parser has to recognise the instrument in the post before the list can be applied, so check on a demo account that the nickname the room uses is read as the symbol you expect.
Then match the broker side. Brokers quote the same market under different names, and many add a prefix or suffix. CopySignals lets you rename a symbol and set a prefix and suffix so the signal's EURUSD becomes whatever your broker calls it. We explain that step in the article on symbol suffixes and broker names. Get the names right first, then the list, because a list built on the wrong spelling skips trades you wanted.
- Write down every symbol the room posted in the last two weeks.
- Delete the ones you do not want, and any your broker does not quote.
- Check each remaining name against the broker's own symbol list, and set renames, prefix or suffix where they differ.
- Run the copier on a demo account and read the log.
Instrument list or word filter?
The list looks at what the post is about. A word filter looks at what the post says. If you want only gold from a mixed room, one entry on the list does the job of a long list of banned words. If you want every symbol but not the daily recap, you need a word filter. Used together, the list narrows the symbols and the filter removes the reports inside them. The word filter side is in skipping recaps and chatter.
Do not make the list too clever on day one. A list of twelve symbols is hard to audit, and every symbol you add is another name to match against the broker. One or two symbols you already understand is a better start, and widening it later takes a minute.
What does the event log show for a skipped instrument?
A post for a symbol that is not on your list is logged as skipped, with the reason. The log keeps a short preview of the message, not the whole conversation. That is how you check the list is doing what you meant: after a week, read every skip caused by the list and ask whether you wanted that trade. If you did, add the symbol. If the symbol is on the list but the trade never appeared, the cause is usually somewhere else, such as a spread that was too wide or a post that did not read as a trade, and the log gives that reason instead. The routine is in the event log article.
Can you use a different list per account?
You set the controls on each copier, and one copier can send the same signal to accounts on MT4, MT5 and eTrader. If your personal account should trade gold and indices and your funded account only gold, set that up as two copiers reading the same room, each with its own list and its own sizing. The account count on your plan is what limits this, not the number of lists. The idea behind it is in sending one signal to many accounts.
What an instrument list does not do
It does not judge a signal. A call on a symbol you listed is placed as written, with the sizing, targets and stop handling you configured. It does not change the instrument either: it cannot turn a gold call into an index trade. And it applies only to accounts you connected on MT4, MT5 and eTrader, the three platforms CopySignals supports. Accounts on other platforms cannot be connected.
It also works alongside the other controls. A cap on open positions stops the account piling up trades, a maximum spread refuses an order on a stretched quote, and a delay waits a chosen time before placing. Each of those is a separate setting, and none of them removes risk.
Where to set it
Add the list when you create the copier, then revise it after the first week of real posts. Every CopySignals plan is the whole product, from Starter at $14 a month, with a 30 day money back guarantee, and the plans are on the pricing page. If the room's calls go to MT5, the Telegram to MT5 page has the setup steps. Begin with the one or two symbols you trade, test on demo, and widen the list only when the log shows you are missing trades you wanted.
