MT5 trade copier: a practical guide

What an MT5 trade copier copies, why the MT5 account decides whether a copy works, and what to check on the follower before you connect it.

An MT5 trade copier watches one source, an MT5 account or a Telegram room, and repeats every trade on your other MT5 accounts at the size you set for each. Most copy failures on MT5 do not come from the copier. They come from the MT5 account it is copying onto: the position accounting, the execution mode and the filling policy that broker chose. CopySignals is a cloud Telegram signal copier for MT4, MT5 and eTrader: it reads the rooms you already follow through your own Telegram account and places the trades on your own broker account. The same product is an MT5 trade copier between your own accounts, and this guide covers what to check on the MT5 side before you connect one.

What does an MT5 trade copier actually copy?

It copies positions, and it does it by placing new orders on the follower. MetaQuotes defines the three words a copier lives on: "An order is an instruction given to a broker to buy or sell a financial instrument", a deal is "the commercial exchange (buying or selling) of a financial security", and a position is "a trade obligation, i.e. the number of bought or sold contracts of a financial instrument". When the master opens a position, the copier sends an order to the follower's broker. When the master moves a stop, closes half or closes the rest, the copier sends the matching change or opposite order. The follower's broker decides whether each one is accepted, and that is where the MT5 details start to matter.

Does it matter if my MT5 account is netting or hedging?

Yes, it is the first thing to find out, because the two systems turn the same master trades into different follower positions. On MetaQuotes' help page, netting means "you can have only one common position for a symbol at the same time", and hedging means "you can have multiple open positions of one and the same symbol, including opposite positions". Two buys on EURUSD on the master become two tickets on a hedging follower and one growing position on a netting follower. Closing one of the master's tickets is then a full close on one account and a partial close on the other. Your broker's account details say which system you have. If it is netting, ask the copier's vendor what a partial close on the master looks like on the follower before you connect it. The longer treatment, with what changes when the master is on MT4, is in our article on copying between MT4 and MT5.

Why does a copied MT5 order get rejected?

Usually because the follower's broker set an execution mode or a filling policy that the order did not respect. MT5 brokers pick one of several execution modes. Under Instant Execution, "if the broker does not accept the requested price, a 'Requote' is sent". Under Market Execution, "a broker makes a decision about the order execution price without any additional discussion with a trader". The same trade on two brokers can therefore fill at a different price, or be refused outright when the price has moved.

The filling policy adds a second layer. In the MQL5 documentation, a Fill or Kill order "can be executed in the specified volume only" and is not executed if that amount is not available. An Immediate or Cancel order takes the volume maximally available and cancels the remaining volume. And a Return order is limited too: "Return orders are not allowed in the Market Execution mode". Which policies are allowed depends on the symbol's settings at each broker, so two MT5 accounts can disagree about an order that looks identical.

What follows for you is practical. Do not assume the first account you tested is representative of the second. Put the follower on a demo account at the same broker, copy a few small trades on each symbol you care about, and look at what the broker did with them: the fill price, the partial fills, the rejections. A copier that reproduces the master's decisions cannot make the follower's broker accept them.

Which MT5 accounts can I connect?

Any MT5 account whose broker server the copier can log into, at any broker. That includes an MT5 account from a prop firm next to a personal one at a different broker. Duplikium's MT5 page says it "supports more than 2'000 MT5 brokers, and we can add any MT5 broker on demand". MetaCopier's documentation shows MT5 in the follower role, "MT5 is the slave and receives the trades". On CopySignals you connect each MT5 account with its broker server, login and trading password, and any connected account can be the master. It works across brokers, and MT4 and eTrader accounts sit in the same setup. We connect MT4, MT5 and eTrader only. If one leg of your book is on another platform, our comparison of MT4 and MT5 trade copiers names the products whose sites list them.

Do I need a VPS for an MT5 trade copier?

Only if the copier runs inside your own terminals. A copier built as an expert advisor needs the MT5 terminal open and connected on a machine that never sleeps, which in practice means renting a VPS. A cloud copier keeps the logged-in sessions on its own servers. MetaCopier's home page says "no need for installation or Virtual Private Servers (VPS)", and Duplikium's says "No VPS, PC or server to run 24/7". CopySignals is the second kind: one MetaTrader terminal per connected account runs on our servers, so you install nothing and your computer can be off. The cost of that design is that the follower needs its trading password on the vendor's side. That trade is laid out in our cloud versus local comparison.

How should an MT5 follower be sized?

Choose the method per follower, then set a maximum lot before you do anything else. CopySignals offers four: a fixed lot, a percent of the account measured against the trade's own stop, a multiple of the master's lot, and the master's lot scaled by balance. The maximum lot caps all of them. MetaCopier's documentation describes the same idea in its own words: a maximum lot for each position, and "if a position exceeds this size, it will be adjusted to this maximum limit". Two accounts at different brokers also have different minimum lots and lot steps, so a ratio that gives 0.03 on paper may not be a size the follower can place.

Symbols need the same care as size. If the master trades XAUUSD and the follower's broker quotes GOLD, or XAUUSD.m, the order fails until a rename or a suffix rule says otherwise. Read the follower's exact names in its Market Watch and set them before the first trade. CopySignals matches renames, prefix and suffix to what the follower's broker quotes, and an instrument list keeps a symbol you never meant to mirror out of the copy.

Can the same MT5 copier take trades from a Telegram room?

On CopySignals it can. The copier reads a room you already belong to through your own Telegram account, parses the instrument, side, entry, stop and every take profit, and places the trade on the MT5 account. The same room can feed an MT5 account and an MT4 account at different sizes. The step-by-step is in how to copy Telegram signals to MT5.

Setting up an MT5 copy on CopySignals

  1. Connect each MT5 account with its broker server, login and trading password. We start a terminal for each.
  2. Pick the source: a Telegram room, or one of your connected accounts as the master. The others become targets.
  3. On each target, set the maximum lot first, then the sizing method.
  4. Compare the follower's symbol names with the master's and add renames, a prefix or a suffix where they differ.
  5. Set the guard rails you want: a maximum spread, a cap on open positions, a delay before placing.
  6. Run it on a demo MT5 account for a day. Read what each order did before a funded account gets near it.

What it costs, and when to pick something else

Starter is $14 a month for one trading account, Basic is $29 for three and Pro is $149 for thirty, with Business by email for more. Every plan is the whole product. Billing is monthly by card or crypto, you can cancel any time, and there is a 30 day money back guarantee. The pricing page has the detail.

Pick something else if a leg of your setup is on a platform we do not connect. And remember what a copier is: it places, changes and closes orders on accounts you connected, at the size you chose, and nothing more. It does not choose trades or give advice, and trading through one carries the same risk as trading by hand. Start on demo, keep the maximum lot low, and check the follower broker's behavior yourself.
