Trading signal abbreviations explained

SL, TP1, BE, limit, running: what each term in a signal room post means, and what it does to the trade on your account.

Trading signal abbreviations are the shorthand signal rooms use in a post: SL for stop loss, TP for take profit, BE for break even, and a handful more that change what you do with an open trade. A new reader sees "XAUUSD buy limit 2331, SL 2324, TP1 2336, BE after TP1" and has to decode it before risking money. CopySignals is a cloud Telegram signal copier for MT4, MT5 and eTrader: it reads the rooms you already follow through your own Telegram account and places the trades on your own broker account. This glossary covers the terms you will meet and what each one means for the trade on your account.

What do SL and TP mean in a trading signal?

SL is the stop loss, the price at which the trade is closed at a loss so it cannot grow further. TP is the take profit, the price at which the trade is closed at a gain. A signal that names no SL leaves you to decide how much to risk, and one without a TP leaves the exit open. What to do when a signal has no stop loss covers the first case.

Most rooms write several targets: TP1, TP2, TP3, sometimes TP4. They are meant to be reached in order, with the nearest first. Some rooms write "TP 2336/2341/2350" on one line, others put each on its own row. CopySignals takes the instrument, the side, the entry or entry zone, the stop loss and every take profit out of the free text, so either layout gives the same four or five numbers. Telegram signal format: what a copier has to read shows the layouts side by side.

What is the difference between a market order and a limit or stop order?

"Buy now" or "sell now" means a market order: take the trade at the current price. "Buy limit" and "sell limit" mean a pending order below the price for a buy, or above it for a sell, waiting for the market to come back to that level. "Buy stop" and "sell stop" mean a pending order on the other side, waiting for the market to break through a level.

The wording matters because a pending order might never fill, while a market order always does. If a room posts "buy limit 2331" while gold trades at 2338, the room expects you to wait. Treating that as "buy now" would give you an entry seven points worse than the one the stop and targets were built around. Pending orders from Telegram signals goes through how those posts are handled.

What does entry zone or range mean?

A zone is a band of prices instead of one number, written "2329-2333" or "2329 to 2333". The room is saying that any fill inside the band is acceptable. The stop and the targets were picked for the whole band, so the further you enter from the middle, the more or less you risk against the same stop. CopySignals reads a zone as part of the signal. Entry zone signal copier: how a zone becomes an order explains what happens next.

What does BE or break even mean?

BE means break even: move the stop loss to the entry price, so that if the market turns back the trade closes at about zero instead of at a loss. Rooms usually write it as a follow-up message, "TP1 hit, move SL to BE", or as part of the original plan, "BE after TP1".

The detail people miss is that break even is a decision about the stop, not an exit. The trade stays open and can still reach TP2 and TP3. It can also be stopped out at the entry price on a pullback and miss them, which is the price of the protection. In CopySignals you choose the number of targets after which the stop moves to break even, as a setting on your account, so you do not depend on the room remembering to say it. Break even and partial close from signal updates has the full picture.

What is a partial close?

A partial close shuts part of the position and leaves the rest running. Rooms write it as "close half at TP1", "take 50%" or "secure some profit". If you open a trade with 1.00 lots and close half at the first target, 0.50 lots remain for the later ones.

CopySignals can close part of the position at each target, and the split across targets can use custom weights. A room that tells its members to close half at TP1 is describing a split; you can set the same one in advance and it will not rely on a message arriving in time. Split take profit weights shows how to set the shares.

What does trailing stop mean in a signal room?

A trailing stop follows the price at a fixed distance as the trade moves in your favour and never moves back. If the market rises 30 points, the stop rises 30 points with it. Rooms write it as "trail SL" or "trailing after TP2". CopySignals supports a trailing stop as one of the ways it manages the trade after the entry. Trailing stop on copied signals explains the options.

What do pips, points and R mean?

A pip is the usual unit for quoting price moves in forex. On most pairs it is the fourth decimal place, so EURUSD moving from 1.0850 to 1.0870 is 20 pips. Many brokers quote a fifth decimal, called a point or pipette, which is one tenth of a pip. Gold and indices are quoted in other units, and rooms use "pips" loosely for them, so check what your broker calls one unit on that symbol before you compare a room's numbers with your platform.

"R" counts the result in multiples of the risk. If your stop is 10 points away and the trade gains 20, it made 2R. A room that reports "+3R" is saying the result was three times the amount risked, not that you gained a given sum. Recap posts like these are not instructions, and CopySignals skips them with the reason on the event log. Signal copier skipped a trade? Read the event log lists the common reasons.

What do "running", "SL hit" and "cancel" mean?

These are status updates about a trade that is already live or pending.

  • "Running" or "active" means the trade is open and nothing is needed from you.
  • "SL hit" or "stopped out" means the stop was reached and the trade is closed at a loss.
  • "TP1 done" or "TP2 hit" means that target was reached, and a partial close or a break even may follow.
  • "Cancel" or "missed" means the entry was not reached, or the room withdrew the setup.

CopySignals exits when the room reports a stop or the last target, so a trade does not stay open after the room has moved on. Rooms vary in how clearly they word these updates, so the demo test below matters. Modify and close messages shows what a copier does with them.

Which abbreviation should you check before going live?

Check the ones that change the exit, since the entry is usually obvious. Take your room's last twenty signals and list how it writes break even, partial close and stop updates. Then run the room into a demo account for a few days and compare the event log with the posts, one by one. If a term is written in a way that is not clear to you, a program will not find it clearer.

CopySignals is not a signal seller or an adviser, and it does not tell you which rooms to follow. It places orders on accounts you connected, with the sizing, targets and controls you set, from $14 a month with a 30 day money back guarantee. It supports MT4, MT5 and eTrader only. If you want to see how your own room is read, start with the Telegram to MT5 copier page. Trading carries risk, and a copier follows the room's decisions, good or bad.

Frequently asked questions

BE means break even: the stop loss is moved to the entry price so the trade closes near zero if the market turns. The trade stays open and can still reach later targets. In CopySignals you choose after how many targets the stop moves to break even.
They are successive take profit targets, with TP1 the nearest to the entry. CopySignals reads every take profit in a signal and can split the position across them with custom weights.
A buy limit is a pending order placed below the current price that fills only if the market falls back to that level. It may never fill. CopySignals reads the entry from the post and handles it as part of the signal.
A recap post is not a trade instruction. CopySignals skips posts that do not read as a trade and writes the reason on the event log. It exits a trade when the room reports a stop or the last target.
