MT4 trade copier: a practical guide
What an MT4 trade copier copies, which MT4 details decide whether a copy works, and what to check on the follower account before you connect it.
An MT4 trade copier watches one source, an MT4 account or a Telegram room, and repeats each trade on your other MT4 accounts at the size you set for each. MT4 is the older platform and the copying is simpler than on MT5, but three MT4 details still decide whether a copy works: how the broker executes orders, how positions are counted, and which parts of the terminal need to be running. CopySignals is a cloud Telegram signal copier for MT4, MT5 and eTrader: it reads the rooms you already follow through your own Telegram account and places the trades on your own broker account. It is also an MT4 trade copier between your own accounts, and this guide covers what to check on the MT4 side before you connect one.
What does an MT4 trade copier copy?
It copies orders. When the master opens a position, the copier sends a matching order to the follower's broker, and when the master changes a stop, closes part of a trade or closes all of it, the copier sends the matching change or closing order. MetaQuotes' MT4 help describes the basic order as "a commitment to the brokerage company to buy or sell a security at the current price", with a Stop Loss and a Take Profit attached to the position afterwards. The follower's broker accepts or refuses each of those orders on its own terms. A copier can reproduce the master's decisions, but it cannot make another broker fill them.
Are MT4 accounts hedging or netting?
MT4 accounts are hedging accounts, so every copied trade becomes its own position. MetaQuotes' release notes for MT5 build 1325 introduced a hedging option there and said "Since the new system is similar to the one used in MetaTrader 4, it will be familiar to traders." The same notes describe hedging as "you can have multiple open positions of one and the same symbol, including opposite position". For a copier this is the easy case. Two buys on EURUSD on the master are two tickets on the follower, and closing one ticket on the master closes one ticket on the follower.
The trouble starts when the master is not on MT4. An MT5 master on a netting account merges its trades into one position per symbol, while your MT4 follower keeps them separate. Our article on copying between MT4 and MT5 covers that case, and the MT5 guide covers the netting side in more detail.
Why does a copied MT4 order get requoted or rejected?
Because MT4 brokers choose one of three execution modes, and each one treats a copied order differently. MetaQuotes lists them on one page. Under Instant Execution, "If broker accepts the prices, the order will be executed. If not, the so-called 'Requote' will occur". Under Execution on Request, "When the prices comes, order execution at the given price can be either confirmed or rejected". Under Execution by Market, the broker "makes a decision about the order execution price without any additional discussion with the trader".
A copier sends orders in bursts. A signal room that posts a trade to several followers, or a master with several open positions moving together, sends the follower's broker many orders at once, often in a fast market. Two followers at two brokers can therefore end the same second at different prices, or one of them can be refused. The practical step is to look at the follower broker's account details for its execution mode, then copy a few small trades on a demo account at the same broker and read what it did with each one. The first account you tested is not evidence about the second.
Does an MT4 copier need a VPS?
Only if the copier runs inside your own terminals. A copier built as an expert advisor lives in the MT4 terminal, so that terminal has to stay open and connected on a machine that never sleeps, which in practice means renting a VPS. A cloud copier keeps the logged-in sessions on its own servers. MetaCopier's home page says "No need for installation or Virtual Private Servers (VPS)", and Duplikium's says "No VPS, PC or server to run 24/7. No installation required." CopySignals is the second kind: one MetaTrader terminal per connected account runs on our servers, so you install nothing and your computer can be off. The price of that design is that the vendor holds your trading password. We set that trade out in cloud copiers against copiers that run on your own machine.
There is an MT4 detail here that people miss. MetaQuotes says the built-in trailing stop "works in client terminal, not at the server like Stop Loss, for example" and "will not work, unlike the above orders, if the terminal is off". A stop loss sits with the broker and survives a dead home computer. A trailing stop that depends on a terminal on that computer does not. If you rely on trailing, you want the terminal doing the work to be one that stays on.
Which MT4 accounts can I connect?
Any MT4 account whose broker server the copier can log into. That includes a prop firm's MT4 login next to a personal account at another broker. Duplikium's MT4 page says "Duplikium supports more than 2'000 MT4 brokers, and we can add any MT4 broker on demand at any time." MetaCopier lists both an "MT5 to MT4 trade copier" and an "MT4 to MT5 trade copier" among its offerings. On CopySignals you connect each MT4 account with its broker server, login and trading password, and any connected account can be the master. MT5 and eTrader accounts sit in the same setup. We connect MT4, MT5 and eTrader only, so if a leg of your book is on another platform, our comparison of MT4 and MT5 trade copiers points to the products whose sites list them.
How should an MT4 follower be sized?
Choose the method per follower and set a maximum lot before anything else. CopySignals offers four: a fixed lot, a percent of the account measured against the trade's own stop, a multiple of the master's lot, and the master's lot scaled by balance. The maximum lot caps all of them. Brokers set their own minimum lot and lot step, so check them against the smallest trade you expect the follower to place.
Symbols need the same care. If the master trades XAUUSD and the follower's broker quotes GOLD or XAUUSD.m, the order fails until a rename or a suffix rule says otherwise. Read the exact names in the follower's Market Watch. CopySignals matches renames, prefix and suffix to what the follower's broker quotes, and an instrument list keeps out any symbol you did not mean to copy.
Can an MT4 trade copier take signals from Telegram?
On CopySignals it can. The copier reads a room you already belong to through your own Telegram account, parses the instrument, side, entry or entry zone, stop loss and every take profit, and places the trade on the MT4 account. The follow-up messages count too: CopySignals moves to break even after a chosen number of targets, closes part at each target, trails the stop and exits when the room reports a stop or the last target. That part is written up in break even and partial close from signal updates, and the step by step for MT4 is in how to copy Telegram signals to MT4.
Setting up an MT4 copy on CopySignals
- Connect each MT4 account with its broker server, login and trading password. We start a terminal for each.
- Pick the source: a Telegram room, or one of your connected accounts as the master. The others become targets.
- On each target, set the maximum lot first, then the sizing method.
- Compare the follower's symbol names with the master's and add renames, a prefix or a suffix where they differ.
- Set the guard rails you want: a maximum spread, a cap on open positions, a delay before placing.
- Run it on a demo MT4 account for a day and read the event log. A skipped trade is listed there with the reason.
What it costs, and when to pick something else
Starter is $14 a month for one trading account, Basic is $29 for three and Pro is $149 for thirty, with Business by email for more. Every plan is the whole product. Billing is monthly by card or crypto, you can cancel any time, and there is a 30 day money back guarantee. The pricing page has the detail.
Pick something else if a leg of your setup is on a platform we do not connect. A copier places, changes and closes orders on accounts you connected, at the size you chose. It does not pick trades or give advice, and trading through one carries the same risk as trading by hand. Start on demo, keep the maximum lot low, and check how the follower's broker fills before a funded account follows.
